Turkey – Fasting, Yoga, & the art of Baklava – September

Fasting & Yoga – To arrive in Turkey on the day of your birthday (12.30am to be precise), and the day before you embark on a two week detox + yoga holiday just has to be written in the stars as pure unadulterated LUCK.

Once again were back at the wonderfully peaceful retreat of Yuva. Situated in the south, away from tourists and package holidays, this place has you relaxing within the hour…and the food…vegetarian/vegan dishes that have you quite literally hmmm’in at the table.

Our good friend Lauren is running her yoga & detox retreat, and we’ve signed up for 2 weeks! Tessa has decided to join us for the first week, and it gives us a good chance to hang out and catch up with her over the last couple of months since leaving London.

ITS HOT, but apparently not as hot as Deans had it in the med, but to me, ITS HOT! The three of us start juice fasting (yes I did get my cake) with another Yuva friend of mine Nicky Dymond (and in name by nature), and Kieron, Lauren’s partner, and our official juice maker and keeper of the high energy. I must say, with all the great food around (yes guests who aren’t fasting still have to eat, and its right there on the next table, we though get to sit at the ‘eating is cheating’ table) and the weather, I find the first two days really hard. But as the days pass, and the tough daily decisions being bikini choice, it gets easier.

After a week, it was very very hard to say goodbye to Tessa, and as always, we had a great time – Thanks T.

After T left, we continued with more yoga and sunning, and after a bright idea of D’s decided to do a liver flush that night. Nicky told me it was just like drinking salad dressing, which at the time (not having eaten solids for 7 days) truly sounded quite novel, even may I dare say, ever so thrilling. So that night after water/broth, we skulled down a combination of 2/3 C olive oil/ 1/3 C lemon juice. Lets be straight, it was not like ANY salad dressing i have ever had/will ever have IN MY LIFE. After the pleasant cocktail, you then have to hot tail it back up to your room, and lie down on your right hand side just to really piss your liver off, and demand that it release all those pee sized toxins it’s been storing in there for years. Some side effects of this flush can induce vomiting, and or reflux etc which I had neither of, and in the morning I did produce some small green peas (with which I did take a photo of out of pure wonder, and I promised Tessa – don’t worry it’s not at the end of this blog Its safe to scroll down), but i think its safe to say that I will probably never be drinking that again.

Dean finished his fast the next morning after 7 days, and I finished mine after 11. A couple of days before I finished I was quite happily being caught sniffing all the food at both meal times – a good lesson in temptation. But you get to a point where your looking forward to eating solid food and the diversity of it, but then again you could quite happily carry on.

The day I broke my fast I went up with Nicky to the sister hotel of yuva for some pool time, and much needed wifi. It was a perfect day spent with a lovely laid-back friend.

After two weeks of luxurious relaxation and time spent with great friends it was time to move on…next stop Istanbul!
